Tech Class Offered to All Interested in Amateur Radio

Amateur Radio (ham radio) is a popular hobby and service that brings people, electronics and communication together. People use ham radio to talk across town, around the world, or even into space, all without the Internet or cell phones. It's fun, social, educational, and can be a lifeline during times of need. The FCC Technician License exam covers basic regulations, operating practices and electronics theory, with a focus on VHF and UHF applications. You don’t need any prior experience or familiarity with electronics and you do not have to learn Morse Code! Technicians may operate FM voice, digital packet (computers), television, single-sideband voice and several other interesting modes. You can even make international radio contacts via satellites, using relatively simple station equipment.

Dates: March 12, 2020 to May 2, 2020 (9 classes)

Time: 5:30pm to 8:00pm (Thursdays Nights)

Fee: $40 (including text book, handouts and exam fee)

WARA Weather Balloon Launch Coming This Spring!

WARA is currently building and launching a state-of-the-art hot air balloon in the Spring of 2020, which will broadcast its location and telemetry (APRS) using home-brewed Arduino kits. Arduino is an affordable and open-source platform for building custom electronics, and integrates seamlessly into amateur radio. The balloon will also feature a number of inertial (IMUs) and atmospheric (elevation, speed, pressure, and temperature) sensors, in addition to broadcasting SSTV over the air. Come help us make history with WARA's first-ever baloon launch!
